What Does "Grading" Mean?
The Pee-Wee Merit Badges and the FSK coloured belt grading system are like stepping stones on a path to a student reaching their full potential and goals and ultimately in FSK, achieving their black belt.
FSK students need to learn a new kata (a set sequence of movements) and improve both their basics and their kumite (sparring) in order to achieve the next belt. As students work through the belts they need to learn to be self-motivated, disciplined and improve their character. Whilst it is not mandatory for students to go through the grading system, we have found it is a great way for both children and adults to have their progress recognised.
The ultimate aim of karate lies not in victory nor defeat, but in the perfection of the character of its participants." - Gichin Funakoshi
